When next we meet Doug Spruce, the mercury man, he is a wandering nomad. He walks where he feels he should, leaving unmistakable evidence of his presence in his wake. He helps as he can if the people he meets need him to, but for the most part, he never stays in one place for too long.
After a few incidents in the Nevada desert, Doug heads on toward California. An odd draw on his mind beckons him to hurry, but only too late does he realize the consequences for taking too long in returning home. Will he and Anya stop an evil man from escaping justice? The story starts with vignettes of a long walk, for character development. Hennis seems to have lost his dry sense of humour since the first of this series. He writes good, solid, clear and simple sentences, but still somehow manages to make it sound a bit pompous. Not an easy trick. Some difficulty with inconsistency of powers (ability to move super-fast but not able catch a perp fleeing down a corridor). Occasional problems with long-drawn and confusing explanations - e.g. how to get out of an underwater pipe.The core cast of three succeed in their current adventure and set themselves up for another sequel - no specific foreshadowing, but lots of things still waiting to be explained. Not as good as the first of the series, but still entertaining. I'll read the third, hoping for a return of the funny asides - or at least no further deterioration.

Short, fast, effective. A must read.
I liked the characters, even their names. And plot works. Whished we know a little note about Anya.
