This book is incredible. It's not the first book by Thom Rainer that I've read, but I would say it is one of his best. This book is simple, yet it's filled with practical information that can save your church and help you reach your potential. At first glance, the title may seem depressing. Rainer looks at 14 churches and dissects the finals years to determine why they died. Part 1 or Chapters 1-11 cover the common themes in these 14 churches. He goes further, though, as the subtitle indicates "12 Ways to Keep Yours (Church) Alive." Part 2 or Chapters 12-14 tells you what to do depending on what stage of sickness your church is currently.One thing I love about this book is that Rainer gives a Prayerful Commitment at the end of each chapter that you and your leadership can pray together. There are also Questions for further thought at the end of each chapter to aid in a group discussion.
I would recommend this book to every church leader no matter what the status of your church. This book is excellent to be read with leadership and is vital to all who want to impact the world by bringing new people into relationships with Christ.

If your church is undergoing little growth, you feel like your church isn't what it used to be in attendance figures and it's hard to keep a pastor around for a while, then this book may stem the tide and help turn your church around and give it another chance at life. An interesting read that took me a couple of nights to read, it offered many good explanations of the difficulties many churches are experiencing before they close their doors forever, and some of the things to consider to rectify the situations. I have heard some of the same examples of what people say in our church as well, and how deadly they can be without even realizing it. If you want to turn the life of your congregation around before it's too late, then get this book for your church board, elders or officers and have them read this book. This author has written many books and came across as very knowledgeable and understanding of church life. Don't just talk about what's going on in your church and not do anything but talk about it, do something before it's too late!
I have unfortunately had the sad privilege of observing several church plants not survive. I also have seen two churches have to close their doors and sell their buildings. None of these were churches that I served at, but they were within our district when I served on the District Board. The two churches that had to close their doors and sell their buildings feel under my responsibility. It was heart wrenching.
Just recently I met with the board and congregation of a small church that was seeking to try and find a pastor. They courted our church plant as a possible merger, but then decided it wasn't for them. The differences in church style were to much. This church has plenty of cash on hand, a building in very good repair and paid for but no full-time or part-time pastor. They are now down to less than twenty people. It is only a matter of time before they close their doors and sell.
So, this book was one of interest for me. I wanted to read what Thom Rainer thought about churches that had died. This is a very short read but probably one of the most fact filled and direct little books that I have ever read.
Thom looks at 14 churches that died. He found twelve similarities in the churches and he dissects those similarities in this book. I found his points correct and almost uncannily familiar to what I had experienced. His most direct observation was that all of these dying churches did not think they had a problem and did not think that they would die. They were in denial of their illness.
Probably the main point I found was that each of these churches had become inward focused. They stopped looking outside their walls to see their communities and to meet those communities needs. Instead they were more concerned with staying warm and comfortable in their own little world, well fed and satisfied with life. They forgot the Great Commission. They forgot the marching orders that Jesus gave His church after His death.
May we never forget those orders. At the end of this booklet after he has dissected what caused the death of these churches Thom gives several suggestions for diagnosis of your church and then remedies to help your church regain it's health and not find that they have a fatal disease.

Rainer's book is a little predictable, which I suppose is not that much of a surprise within itself. The question that kept on nagging me while reading the book was the question about what the definition of "successful" church is here - and how this might look differently across an aggregate of rural vs. urban vs. suburban contexts. Either way, the advice is solid and general - and is what you would probably expect. I'm just wondering for whom this book is helpful. It seems to get dangerously close to the prayer of the Pharisee that I "thank God that I am not like those other churches...". It isn't there itself, but I can see it solidifying those opinions in certain church circles. I guess all together the book is a good book to read and consider, but Rainer's other books probably provide much more depth and context.
